 A Great Idea Taken too Far July 24, 2010

This is the second order of these glasses for me from Amazon - 2 sets of 2 this time.
Pro: the glasses work just as advertised - they keep your summer drinks nice and cold in the hottest weather. They are also very comfortable to hold and drink from.
Con: these double-walled glasses from Bodum are a great idea but in the case of the 12 oz. tall glasses they have taken a good idea one step too far. They are WAY TOO DELICATE for (even careful) use around the house and/or garden. I am down to 1 out 4 after only a couple of weeks - the last one cracked when ice cubes were dropped in carefully from the rim into an empty glass.
Note: if you also buy the 8.5 oz. Bodum glasses Bodum Pavina 8.5-Ounce Double-Wall Thermo Tumber/DOF Glass, Set of 2 do not throw away the containers: they make an excellent packing for disposing of your broken 12 oz. glasses. Incidentally, I have all six of my 8.5 oz. glasses, several after more than a year's daily usage, so I believe blaming the product not the user is a fair comment.

These glasses do exactly what they promise. They REALLY keep your drink cold. It's almost surprising when you reach for your 1/4 glass of beer, while sitting out on the deck on a hot day, and it is still nice and cool. Add to that, the fact that the outside of the glass is the ambient temperature and the effect is wonderful.
My only complaint with these is the shape at the top. The bulge almost lends a beer mug feel to the lip, instead of the finer edge you'd expect from a nice glass. I've ordered the canteen shape to see if that makes much difference. I think it will based on the images.
Either way I recommend these for anyone who likes a nice cool brew.

Well, that didn't take long...
Less than a week after receiving our box of two glasses, one is already broken simply by accidently touching the top rim against another glass.
Please beware, these are very fragile glasses on the order of very thin and fragile crystal. You may even break them by touching the rim with a bottle while pouring, etc.
Great idea, worked great too. Just not worth it. I'm going to see if I can get a partial refund.

These glasses are mouth-blown glass, elegant to handle and use. They are advertised as keeping hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold, which is what they do. They are not advertised as unbreakable, but I have not found them as delicate as some reviews suggest. I treat them as I would any fine glassware. They are not knockabout tumblers. I have some experience with glassware as I bit into my first goblet at age 4 in the bar of the grandmother's hotel; that was my worst experience of broken glass as they made me drink mustard water to make me vomit. Since then I have broken countless glasses and believe I can speak with authority when I say: any glass can break and eventually most of them do. But these Bodum glasses are aesthetically pleasing and not really delicate; they just need to be treated with respect. I use them for hot tea or cold beer and they work just as well for both.
